Some tips from the top

On several occasions, I have spoken at Entrepreneurial Scotland dinners on “Building your top team.” On each occasion, I have asked some successful business leaders to provide me with tips to pass on to the entrepreneurs who were attending.

Here is a selection:

“Lead by example. You need to set high standards and, crucially, live by them”

Jim Faulds, NXC, Jumpstart and Change Recruitment

“Build trust. If there’s no trust, there’s no team”

John Brodie, Chief Executive, Scotmid

“Make work enjoyable for your team e.g. give them time off whenever they want it, provided the work gets done. It’s amazing the loyalty this generates”

Bruce Phillips, CE, Australian Worldwide Exploration

“Have a sense of humour, passion, and absolute focus- in US twang- “the main thing, is to keep the main thing, the main thing!”

Cahal Dowds, Managing Partner, Deloitte Scotland
